Yesterday turned in to a much busier day than I had planned. I took Kyra in for her immunizations in the morning and then ran by the mall to find a pair of jeans for her and shirts for Jeremy and I to wear for the pics we're having taken tomorrow. Those were plannned activities. I also planned that Kyra would be fussy and feverish yesterday afternoon 'cause shots tend to do that. Everything was going according to plan until about noon. That's when Kyra started screaming. And by screaming, I mean screaming, not crying loudly literally the little one was screaming. This kept going off and on 'til about three. That's when the screaming turned into screaming and wheezing. Jeremy was home and once he heard the wheezing he decided we needed to take her in, I agreed with him entirely 'cause this didn't seem like a "normal" reaction to shots and I really didn't like to hear the wheezing!
When we got to the hospital they initially brushed us off and told us the triage nurse would get her vitals but that she was fine. The triage nurse eventually saw her and he had a hard time getting her vitals so he found us a bed in the back and got a few other nurses to help him with the vitals. Her heart rate was quite high (over 200 at times) and she was once again screaming her little head off and wheezing. The doctor came back to examine her and decided that her legs (where they gave her the shots) were causing her a lot of pain which was causing her heart rate and blood pressure to go way up which in turn was leading to the wheezing. So they gave her some tylenol. (On a side note, the pediatrician had told me a dosage that was about 60% of what she actually could take and told me to give that dose every 6 hours while the hospital said every 4 hours, and the nurse in the immunization clinic told me not to give her tylenol unless her fever spiked to over 103.) She started to calm down after the tylenol but her heart rate was still high so they did an EKG. Everything on the EKG was normal, her heart rate just remained high (around 160-170 and they like it to be around 140-150). After 3+ hours in the emergency room, we were finally released with instruction to give her the "new" dose of tylenol every 4 hours and to keep an eye on the pain, heart rate and wheezing.
She slept comfortably last night (in my arms in the recliner) and though she sounds stuffy this morning, she is much better than yesterday afternoon! The plan for today is to stay in our pjs and get as much as rest as we want, hopefully today's plans will go better than yesterday's!!!
